April 2009 Ponderosa Park Association Newsletter
It's been awhile since last newsletter. Lots to report:

Stolen Sign Replaced
As many residents have noticed, the Ponderosa Park sign on Ponderosa Road was stolen
back in 2008. We had a new made and Allen Laudenslager and Mike Brockert installed it on
May 5, 2009. We hope you all enjoy having the sign back where it belongs.

Clean Up Day
The Board approved a dumpster for May 23rd and it will be available for a full week
unless it gets full sooner. We discussed renting a chipper, but decided that the liability
to the association was too great and decided not to rent one.

Annual Picnic
The picnic is scheduled for Saturday September 5, 2009, Labor Day weekend. We are hoping
that more people will attend since it is a holiday weekend and many "weekenders"
will be here.

The Future of the Association
Unless we can find some interested members, the current Board has agreed to serve one
more year in a caretaker capacity. If no one steps up, Allen Laudenslager will recommend
to the Board that we close the association and donate any funds to a suitable charity.
Members interested in continuing the association can contact Allen Laudenslager at
(928) 713-1613 or by email at President@PonderosaParkAssociation.org.

Evacuation Training Session
Saturday, March 21, 2009 the Yavapai County Sheriff's Jeep Posse held an evacuation
training session in Ponderosa Park. The posse drove through the park, to familiarize the
members with the area, and tagged houses to show that they would have notified residents
about an evacuation and how quickly they would need to leave. They also left some flyers
with evacuation instructions.
Please take this opportunity to plan for your evacuation and collect the things you
might need to take with you. During an evacuation, you might not have time to gather
together your important papers and special memories so that you are not scrambling at the
last minute.
I will be talking with the Forest Service, County disaster agency and the Sheriff's
office to find out about emergency services for full time residents who have pets and
might be at work or away from home during an emergency to find out what services might be
available if you can't get back in to get your pets.

Prescott Area Women's Shelter (PAWS)
Since opening in December 2009, the Prescott Area Women's Shelter (PAWS) has served 22
women, 4 children, and provided 228 bed nights. Thanks to the generous community of
Prescott, PAWS has received most of its needed items from the wishlist. PAWS is in need of
monetary support for operating and administrative costs. PAWS recently was able to raise
enough funds to hire a part-time Shelter Coordinator. This extra staff member will help
implement case plans with guests, provide more intensive volunteer training, and improve
the overall organization of the PAWS program. They are a key asset to the sustainability
and success of the shelter, and PAWS hopes to offer them full-time status as soon as
possible. PAWS also needs to begin raising funds to pay rent on their shelter facility for
the coming year, as the $25,000 grant they were awarded by United Way and the Yavapai
County Community Foundation ends in October. All donations can be made out directly to the
Prescott Area Women's Shelter, are tax deductible, and can be mailed directly to the
shelter 336 N. Rush St., Prescott, Az.

Ponderosa Road Clean Up
Our last clean up was on 11/09/08. Larry and Jane Peterson, Mike and Pat Brockert
and Allen Laudenslager walked Ponderosa Road from the Fire Station to White Spar Road to
pick up trash. We picked up about 2 full yard trash bags and it only took about a half an
hour.

Kaibab road
On September 29, 2008, the county started working on Kaibab road where erosion created
a very bad ditch. Last winter several people had to be towed out of this ditch,
particularly after one snow fall that made the edge of the road hard to see. Thanks to
Connie Ellis, who helped get the county to pay attention by calling and emailing one of
the country Supervisors.
We are still on the list to have Kaibab paved in 2010 and Pine Cone in 2009. The county
rep that I spoke with asked me to make sure that I passed on that this schedule is
"funding permitting". The county has been rescheduling road work as state and
federal funding changes.

Forest Thinning
Kurt Wetzstein, Forester with the Prescott National Forest emailed us that the Forest
Service recently awarded a permit to thin Oak and Juniper on the North side of Ponderosa
Park, West of Ponderosa Road.
The goal is to thin out the forest to allow the Ponderosa Pines to become better
established and to reduce the fire hazard. He included a more complete explanation that we
will be happy to provide to anyone who is interested but is too long to include on the
website.
Feel free to email President@PonderosaParkAssociation.org
for a copy of the full text.

We are now accepting dues for 2010
Annual dues are $20.00 per household and may be paid by check. Please mail your check
to our Treasurer, Mike Brokert, at 4886 Juniper Loop, Prescott, AZ 86303
